I’m not sure if it’s because of the biking, or the yoga, or the combination of both, but lately I’m experiencing a feeling of tightness in my thighs that I’ve never felt before.
It doesn’t feel like a muscular tightness, or at least not any I’ve ever felt before. It feels (forgive the arrogance) like my quads are getting too big for my skin. They’re not, obviously, but that’s where the feeling of tightness is - right near the surface. It’s more pronounced when I flex my quads, and also when I externally rotate my legs (putting them in lotus actually requires quite a bit more effort than before.)
anyone know what I mean? such a strange feeling.
Liz and I went to the Middle East last night for open mic night (no, I didn’t perform) with the hopes of seeing The Yer Moms in action again. Unfortunately they weren’t in attendance. There were, fortunately, some *great* acoustic acts performing. One duo from Texas (I think that’s what they said) were particularly good. Almost makes me want to take some time away from the banjo and play guitar more.
One funny thing about last night. We were sitting in seats we’d just moved to because the view was better than at the bar. There was some confusion over the chairs which caused the other couple of people sitting there to move to roughly where we’d been. They realized their mistake (bad view) and came back a few minutes later, sitting directly between me and my view. This wasn’t so bad, I could tilt my head just a little bit and see around the drunk mexican man sitting a foot away from me. He turned around at some point to look behind him. Given that I was looking basically an inch to the right of his head at the stage, and given how drunk he was, he thought I was looking at him. He (apparently, I was diligently staring at that inch to the right) looked at me, nodded, smiled, then continued to stare. Eventually I figured he wasn’t looking at random things behind him and turned to Liz. She was smiling and laughing a little, and said “how’s it goin’?” I said “good” and turned around to watch the band some more. He was still staring. I think he may have looked me up and down once.
I just realized I left my cell phone at home. Damn.
kind of hackish at the moment, but scsharp now has alpha composited animations in UI elements. The main menu is looking a lot closer, wouldn’t you say?

cool thing (more like awesome thing):
SCSharp now has Smacker playback. It’s a managed port of the ffmpeg decoder, and seems to have decent performance.
That’s right. it’s entirely managed. No additional external dependencies. We’re still only depending on the SDL libraries.
And the coolest part? I didn’t write it
It magically showed up on my doorstep, courtesy of MtPOI (who did the port), and of course the ffmpeg people.
funny thing:
I watched An Inconvenient Truth this weekend. It was an excellent presentation: sobering, scary, and inspiring.
No, that’s not the funny part.
The funny part is that, during some Antarctica sequence, the viewer is treated to an eye-popping helicopter ride over ice floes and up over the lip to an ice shelf, where the viewer sees a wide expanse of ice, mountains in the background, and an orange sunset off to the right. Why is this funny? Because it’s the footage from the opening credits of The Day After Tomorrow. No, I’m not making this up.
it’s raining again, and raining hard. I spent most of the day at home, partially because I was still kinda tired from the ride yesterday and lounging felt really good, and partially because I was not relishing walking outside.
I finally came in at around 4pm. My little umbrella was no match for the wind and rain and cars and puddles. There was perhaps a square foot of my torso that wasn’t soaked. Oh, and a spot on the top of my head. Keep in mind this is from a 10 minute walk.
The ride yesterday was good. Much, much better than the last one with Nat. The hill on the way back from Concord to Lexington hurt, but it didn’t take 15 hellish minutes to get to the top. Strength-wise I think I’m a little bit behind where I was on the first ride of last year. Which means a couple more rides like that and I’ll be in good shape.
I figured out my max heartrate too. I was flipping through this long distance cycling book I picked up a few weeks ago, and read something along the lines of this: “to figure out your maximum heartrate, find a long, steady, fairly steep hill. start out pedalling hard. when you feel yourself flagging, sprint. when you feel you’ve got nothing left, go faster. keep going. when you start seeing black spots, look down at your bike computer. the number there is your max hr. pull over before you pass out.”
Man was it painful. I looked down and saw 199. This seems to be higher than most people (myself included) expect. What can I say? I have the body of a 25 year old.
