feeling like an old man

toshok | Uncategorized | Friday, January 30th, 2004

This morning is pretty bad. I can’t both stand upright and straighten my left leg. So walking involves either hunching over or pain. Sitting and laying down (with my left knee up) are ok, but I really don’t want to do either all day.

Maybe it’s my posture. Maybe it’s lack of stretching. Maybe I’m just growing old. Regardless, I dunno how I’m going to snowboard like this. Ibuprofen and a hot shower, here I come.

Last night, I went to see Doc Watson, David Holt, and Doc’s grandson Richard Watson perform in Redwood City. The ticket was originally Peter’s, but his work schedule has been insane lately and rather than have the ticket go to waste, I drove down to watch the show. I’d never heard Doc’s music before. To say I was floored would be an understatement. Charming man, engaging performer, brilliant guitarist. I hope I’m as vibrant and possess the same dexterity at his age.

I’ve always considered myself blind. But I figure I can see me a thing or two.

damn right.

support the cause

actually it’s not my cause..

I was on IRC the day after the raid.. or maybe 2 days after, I can’t remember. And my online-only-but-we-only-live-like-3-blocks-from-one-another friend Ian says:

<yakk> http://www.cafeshops.com/freetoshok/

oh dear, i think. immediately I go and purchase 4 shirts and a trucker hat (for my roommate).

So, if you want to wear some exciting FREE TOSHOK stuff, go click that and buy something. Rest assured I won’t see one red cent of the proceeds.

If you do happen to purchase something, though, take a picture of yourself wearing it and send it along to freetoshokpics@toshok.org. I’ll put them all up on the web, so make sure you’re doing something embarrassing and/or illegal.

Good things from the past 2 days

- Playing guitar with Austin last night, amusing Peter with our attempts at sounding like Neil Young.

- The cds I got in the mail yesterday, and then the ones I bought at Tower later in the evening. Tower bad.

- From one of the Iron & Wine cds, the lyric “Mother don’t worry she’s got a garden we’re planting together.”

- Getting out of an overly hot shower this morning, standing in front of the mirror to shave, and seeing the steam rising off me catch in the sunlight.

The way down

Didn’t sleep well last night at all. Lots of bad dreams. Lots of waking up with limbs numb. Lots of tossing and turning.

The cat woke me up, head butting my hand. Then she sat on my chest and started purring. Normally it sounds like she’s saying “pet me”, but this morning it sounded more like “it’s time for you to be going.” She didn’t whine when I got up and forced her off her perch.

I washed the cups we barely drank out of, got dressed, and walked up to Church to catch the J. Stood on a stoop out of the drizzle, drying off my book on my sweater. Took a minute to realize that my sweater was just making the book wetter. Dried it off on my pants instead.

While standing on the stoop, a man came out of the house and said “I just wanted to compliment you on your bookmark.” I smiled and said “oh, thanks”. He walked off down the street, stopped about 20 feet away and turned and called “It looks *just* like a dollar bill.” I nodded. It was a dollar bill.

After 10 pages, the J arrived. I got on, got my transfer, and walked back to take a seat. Just as I was sitting down a man sitting facing me said “you dropped your transfer.” I looked back and saw one on the floor. I had no memory of which hand it had been in, but it was in fact in neither now. Dazed, I bent down and picked it up. Sat down and continued reading.

Home now.

Down.

out of place but not unwelcome

plastic green and red apples dangling from the barren branches of a tree on Fillmore.

I woke up insanely early (for me) this morning. 6:45. Had to move my car. I never fancied myself a morning person. In the past it was always *really* hard for me to do any work in the morning. my mind was always too fuzzy.

Lately though, I’m finding that it’s actually easier for me to get stuff done in the morning. All my distractions (a.k.a. friends) are still asleep, and for some reason it’s really easy to concentrate on the stuff that needs doing. This morning I re-parked near my house, ran up the stairs, made myself some oatmeal and a mug of earl grey and started working.
